"A merry heart does good, like medicine, But a broken spirit dries the bones." (Prov 17:22)

There is a very serious problem that is a stark reality in our society especially among many of our youth (Teens, College students, Adults).  It can be considered epidemic in our culture and transcends all age groups.  Many people walk around warring in their minds with negative thoughts!

THE BATTLE OF OUR THOUGHT LIFE!

  • I want to give up!

  • I hate myself and feel nobody loves me!

  • I have no reason or purpose to live!

  • I feel abandoned by God and everybody around me!

  • I don't want to live anymore ? there is no hope for me!

  • Leave me alone. I want to be by myself and not talk to anybody!

  • I don't care if I die because life is not worth living!

These are very serious feelings that have a solution and it must be approach in a spiritual way because the answers lie in the freedom provided in Jesus Christ. There is hope for you that are suffering!!!

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." [John 8:31-32]

A great part of the solution is to understand why you are experiencing and what you are going through.  The "root cause" is the issue that must be discovered to obtain the freedom that you know you desire. You are a three dimensional person ? which consists of a Body; Soul and Spirit.

"Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." [1 Thessalonians 5:23]

UNDERSTANDING THE WHOLE PERSON!

BODY - Your physical flesh; your physiological and biological self.
SOUL - The seat of your emotions or what you feel and your appetites; seat of your will and where choices are made; and the mind where you reflect, think, perceive and desire.
SPIRIT ? It is referred to as "Wind" or the inward life in you that is given by God. It is the sum of who you really are ? nature and character! It is the element of life in man. Who you really are!

You are fearfully and wonderfully made and connected in such a way where how you think will affect your entire being! The battle is in your thought life or in your mind.

"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well." [Ps 139:14]

THE CONNECTION OF SOUL AND BODY
The soul consists of your mind; free will and emotions. Whatever you think on will result in feelings arising within you called emotions. Remember, your free will chooses what you decide to think on. Thoughts are what release various emotions.

These emotions trigger a release of natural chemicals within your physical body that were initially designed to help you. When you think on good things a chemical is released in the body called "serotonin". This chemical facilitates many body functions which includes feeling good about yourself!!!

NOW HEAR THIS!  When you think on negative thoughts the serotonin stops being produced and you now have a serotonin deficiency that is correctly termed a "chemical imbalance". You then slip into a depression or a downer state of mind! The root cause is a spiritual one of discovering what is bringing on the negative thought into your mind and showing you how to eliminate them.

"Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy -- meditate on these things." (Philippians 4:8)

Understanding and getting under control your thought life is critical! We need to capture our thoughts and get them under control.

"For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ," (2 Corinthians 10:3-6)

PROZAC OR JESUS CHRIST?
Prozac is a drug prescribed as a temporary fix. The side effects will eventually compound the problem! It first will be a serotonin enhancer by blocking the dendrite ends of your nerves and not allowing the serotonin originally produced to return prolonging a "good feeling" or a sense of well being.

One of the side effects of Prozac is anxiety which results in more feelings of guilt; conflict and rejection. This in turn cuts off all flow of serotonin and you literally will go into a deeper depression! The root cause of why your thinking the way you are thinking must be revealed. It is a spiritual problem! I would like to add that other chemicals are released in your body when you feel anxiety such as Cortisol and Adrenaline. They were designed to help but are destructive if constantly being released.

Your thought life is the key to freedom. What are you thinking on? What has happened to you in the past that is bringing on this self hatred and rejection? What music are you listening to? What are allowing your eyes to see? Your free will chooses what you thing on and this in turn affects how you feel. Your bodies physiological design then releases the chemicals within that affect your whole well being.

BODY; SOUL; SPIRIT CONNECTION
God has given you the breath of life called "spirit". Your very life essence came from Him! God desires you to be one with Him.

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being." (Genesis 2:7)

The life of God given to you is ultimately affected by what you choose to think on! There is a struggle going on within you that many of you understand. This is a description of the pathway we all follow:

        THOUGHTS>EMOTIONS>ACTIONS>HABITS>NATURE>CHARACTER>DESTINY

IMPORTANT:  Whatever you think on will bring forth emotions that influence you to choose particular actions. If these actions are repeated a number of times a habit develops that forms your nature. Your nature determines your character and ultimately your life and eternal destiny.

"Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death." (James 1:12-15)

IMPORTANT: Below is a process that all people have experienced to some degree. Determine where you had been or where you even may be now.

You can stop the slide of the "Deadly D?s".

"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." (Philippians 4:13)

"You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4)

SIX DEADLY D?S

1) Disappointment ? Defeat or failure of expectation, hope, wish, desire or intention; miscarriage of design or plan.
This says, "If God was what I thought He was, this wouldn?t be happening to me." There is a tendency to look at experiences and be disappointed. NO ONE WHO KNOWS CHRIST SHOULD BE DISAPPOINTED ABOUT ANYTHING (1 Thess. 5:18, I Cor. 13:4-8). You must refuse disappointment by the peace that passes all understanding (Col.3:12-21). Yes, this can be difficult to do!
2) Discouragement ? Being disheartened and deprived of confidence, courage and hope. Act of deterring or dissuading from an undertaking. The feeling of giving up enters the mind.
This says, "I tried it once and it didn?t work so why bother trying again. I thought I knew God and felt his leading and nothing happened so what?s the use." But, we must trust in God and never give up (Psa. 118:5-8, I Peter 5: 6-7)
3) Disallusionment ? Where high expectations were perceived and imagined and have not come to pass.
This says, "I thought I saw happiness in this relationship but it was only a mirage." (Isa. 41:10, Prov. 19:21, 27:1, James 3:13-14, Phil. 3:3, 11Cor.4:15-17, Jer.17:5-7, Rom.15:13, 8:24-25). "I thought my life was to go this way and it hasn?t!"
4) Depression ? A sinking of the spirit of man; dejection, want of courage, withdrawing inwardly, low state of strength in body & mind. A heavy sadness with heavy frustration.
This says "I don?t know what to do. I can?t think straight and I?m so frustrated. Just leave me alone!" This is where the mind goes round and round in incoherent thinking. (Isa.40:13, Psa. 23, Eph. 3:16; Psa. 30:10-11, Psa. 42)
5) Disintegration of Morality ? Separation or breakdown of our moral duties and ethics toward friends; family a mate and/or children.
This says, "I hate my life and I must get out; and nobody can stop me!" All good intentions and plans seem to disappear. (Jer.18:12, Rom.1:28-32, Psa. 13:6, Acts 17:30, 4:12, I John 1:9, I Tim.2:3-5)

NOTE: This is the time where many will resort to cutting; eating disorders; use of drugs [prescription or illegal]; alcohol abuse; pornography; severe withdrawal and other addictions.
6) Defeat ? To be vanquished, overthrown or destroyed.

Friendships; marriages; families and relationships are broken. The effects are so damaging that the people involved can never be healed apart from Jesus Christ. Some may temporarily come out but drift back in! YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE DEFEATED! GOD LOVES YOU!

NOTE: AT TIMES SUICIDE APPEARS TO BE THE ONLY SOLUTION ? AND SOME MAKE THAT FATAL MISTAKE!

A SPIRITUAL REALITY
One thing you must always realize there is a entity or enemy who desires to destroy your whole being ? body; soul; spirit! It begins in the mind and this enemy is called the devil. He cannot read your mind but can speak thoughts into it. He has studied man through the ages and always tries to gain access and footholds in people?s lives through past hurts and offenses.

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you." (1 Peter 5:8-11)

IMPORTANT: The greatest advantage an enemy can have over you is to make you believe he doesn?t exist. God?s Word is truth!

The only way to stop this slide is to conform to the image you were created in by God?s grace. The first step is forgiveness (Matthew 6:14-15, Ephesians 4:32). His grace is not to be used to make us rich, wealthy or famous. This seems so attractive to us but the only purpose of that grace was to make us like Christ (Romans 8:28-29), and then we can forgive. If we can grasp this and understand then we will know that nothing can touch us because it went through his nail-pierced hands.

Don?t let yourself slide down the path of the "6 Deadly D?s". If you are on this scale somewhere, call out for help and set your sights on the hope which eyes cannot see but through faith we know exists.

STEPS TO PERSONAL FREEDOM!

1) REALIZE AND RECOGNIZE!
The beginning stage of freedom is to begin to understand the problem and see what it is. Ask for help!!!

"Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they have no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And their multitude dried up with thirst." (Isaiah 5:13)

"My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children." (Hosea 4:6)

"But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil." (Hebrews 5:14)

2) BE ACCOUNTABLE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY!
Don?t point the finger at somebody else. Accept the blame! Yes, people may have hurt you but you must be forgiving!

3) FORGIVENESS ? MAKE JESUS CHRIST YOUR SAVIOR!
This can be tough if somebody had hurt you in the past but it is the most necessary step to freedom! It may be forgiving yourself; asking God to forgive you; or forgiving others; as well as you asking someone else to forgive you!

3) YOU MUST TURN AND REPENT!
You must make a decision that I will change and think and act on good and pure things. There must be some remorse on your part for your personal situation.

"Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord," (Acts 3:19)

4) RENOUNCE VERBALLY AND ACT ON WHAT YOU SAY!
Remorse doesn?t mean you have changed or are willing to. It is speaking life and putting into action the things that are necessary to change on the inside.

5) RESIST THE ENEMY OF YOUR SOUL!
We are in a war but God gives us strength to resist and push back those destructive thoughts and tendencies. It will take a decision of your will with prayer and support from those around you!

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." (James 4:7-8)

6) PRAY ? READ YOUR BIBLE ? FIND A GOOD CHURCH!
Prayer is a key and discovering the truth of God?s Word. Finding people who love God and desire to support you in your time of struggle is very important!

"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)

"So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (Romans 10:17)

"And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:24-25)

GOD LOVES YOU AND WANTS YOU TO BE FREE!

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." (John 3:16-17)
