How do you know God exists? Where did He come from?

Fundamental to all Christian belief is that a personal, moral God exists. Proof that God exists can be found in creation itself. We know the universe had a beginning, and that beginning was caused by something. We observe that the universe is very complex and realize there is intelligence behind its design. That intelligence, or causation behind the universe, is God.
We also observe that the universe has been put together for some purpose. When you study a watch, you see that it is made up of many intricate parts. Take one part out and it will not work properly because each part has a purpose. The parts did not come together by chance -- there was a watchmaker. How much more complex is one cell of our human body? What this implies is that all designs require a designer, and since the universe has such a phenomenal physical and natural order, there must be a fantastic originator or designer.
Just as the universe has a physical and natural order, it has a moral order. All men are conscious of moral laws, as the Bible states that the law was written into our heart (Romans 2:14-15). So there must also be a moral law originator, one who is divine and supreme, who is good.
Some may ask who or what created God, or where did He come from. The answer is simply that we are finite beings while God is infinite. In other words, God is the uncaused cause of all finite things. God always was, always is, and always will be. Any finite mind will have trouble comprehending this, especially if there is skepticism and doubt. But consider the following.
There are only three possible kinds of being: self caused, caused by another, and uncaused. Which are we? Self caused is impossible with respect to existence; we can't bring ourselves into existence. Uncaused would mean that we are necessary, eternal, infinite beings, which we are not; so we must be caused by another. If we are caused by another, what kind of being is He? Again, self caused is impossible; if He were caused by another, that would lead to an infinite regress; so He must be uncaused (Norman Geisler and Ron Brooks, When Skeptics Ask, 30-31).â??
Understanding and realizing that the Bible is true, as well as the historical record of the birth, death, and resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ, are also proofs of God's existence. No other religion or philosophy on earth offers any plausible explanation that God exists. According to the Bible, the fool, in his heart, says there is no God (Psalm 14:1).
Point to Ponder: Cultures that have been discovered that had no contact with the modern world were found to have recorded the following beliefs in their ancient folklore. Again, they had no contact with others.
- The knowledge that the world was created by one God (innate knowledge)
- A rebellion, where people who were in error fell from God's favor
- A need to sacrifice to appease God
- Evidence of a devil that tempted people
- The occurrence of a great flood
- The sudden appearance of many languages and a dispersion of human beings
- A need for further revelation to know what to do next
